Philosophy

The training towards the degrees in the disciplines of medical and health Sciences are geared to respond to the recognition of life as a bio-psycho-socio-cultural entity in which continuous and rapid changes are the norm. The academic programmes are designed to provide the graduates with a fundamental body of knowledge to make them sufficiently versatile to understand these changes and contribute meaningfully to the health sciences knowledge industry.

Faculty Objectives

The aims and objectives of the faculty and its activities are guided by the core components of its mission of contributing to the health and socioeconomic well-being of the nation through the following objectives:

  1. To promote a high quality of teaching and learning experience for both students and staff, whilst adopting the most appropriate teaching and learning methods that offers students choice, flexibility and inter-professional opportunities.
  2. To prepare and support healthcare practitioners to engage with lifelong learning and reflective practice that will promote high standards in evidence-based practice.
  3. To prepare students with sufficient theoretical scientific knowledge base, practical skills and technological competences that enable them assume professional positions at primary, secondary and tertiary levels of health care.
  4. To assist students in the development of interpersonal skills necessary to function as members of the health team.
  5. To work in partnership with service users, health care providers and agencies mainly in the Northern region of Nigeria, but also nationally and internationally on health care research, education and scholarship.
  6. To engage with scholarship and research applied to health care policy and practice, in order to evaluate, develop and wherever possible improve professional practice.

Office of the Dean

The Dean of the Faculty oversees departments and academic programmes in the Faculty.ย  The Dean supervises and approves all faculty searches and departmental hiring plans; works with Faculty Board committees on appointment and promotion of staff; academic issues and initiatives; serves as the faculty’s advocate within the University; and is a member of the University Management.

The Department of Medical Laboratory Science offers a five-year professional degree program leading to the award of Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) and general certification from the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) enabling graduates to practice across Nigeria.

The Department is committed to providing necessary skills, attitudes, and critically-thinking practitioners equipped to be future leaders in the health care community. In this pursuit, the Department ensure that graduates meet the national competency standards set by the MLSCN and are highly skilled health professionals who advance the profession through:

  • Scholarship: analyze, adapt, and build upon knowledge to guide and advance practice.

The mission of the Department is to impart knowledge and skill-based training through exemplary teaching, innovative research, and patient-centered practice in Niegrians and beyond.

In pursuing its mission, the Department shall focus on achieving the following objectives:

  1. Develop and deliver a curriculum that: reflects current laboratory knowledge and best-practice; promotes critical thinking, scholarship, and life-long learning.
  2. Provide a student-centered environment through individualized advising, responsive mentoring/instruction, and supportive faculty/staff.
  3. Graduate competent career-entry level medical laboratory practitioners that meet entry-level competencies,and are positioned for leadership in medical laboratory practice.
  4. Promote and advocate for medical laboratory professions.
  5. Prepare practitioners who can generate accurate laboratory data to be used in patient care and who can evaluate the validity of that data and assure its reliability.

The Department Nursing Science works collaboratively with local and national health providers to provide high-quality education, professional practice development and research that meets the needs of the evolving healthcare sector and supports excellence in practice, to the benefit of all those who access healthcare. The Department is committed to promoting the effective integration of education, research and professional practice.

The Department provide students with student-centred guidance and flexibility in studying through simulation, and blended learning approach. Students of nursing science acquire skills needed to operate in multicultural and international work environments.

The mission if the Department is to prepare nursing professionals at the undergraduate level who are able to engage humanistically, think critically, act ethically, and pursue life-long learning.

The Department has the following Objectives

  1. Provide instruction and facilities to stimulate student to obtain knowledge and develop understanding to function as a beginning practitioner of nursing.
  2. Develop the graduate’s professional, managerial, and personal skills so that the student can interact and practice within national and international health systems.
  3. Motivate students’ continuous development, creativity, innovation, and excellence in scientific and practical knowledge and scientific research
  4. Increasing partnerships and collaboration with local, regional, and global institutions to hone students’ competencies that contribute to the individual, community and global health.

The Department of Nursing Science offers a five-year professional degree program covering three (3) core areas: Nursing, Midwifery and Public Health leading to the award of Bachelor of Nursing Sciences (BNS).

Physiotherapy is a health care profession with an emphasis on the use of physical approaches for the promotion of health and the prevention, treatment and management of disease and disability.

The physiotherapy department strives to graduate competent physical therapists equipped with knowledge, skills, values, and lifelong learning skills to practice as an entry level physical therapists upon graduation.

The department comprises of a team of highly skilled and efficient physiotherapists concerned with identifying and maximizing quality of life and movement potential within the spheres of promotion, prevention, treatment/intervention, habilitation and rehabilitation.

Mission & Objectives

The departmentโ€™s mission is to train physiotherapists who are equipped with the knowledge, skills and competency in the field of physiotherapy and rehabilitation to provide promotive, preventive and curative services to meet the health needs of the nation and the global community through world-class excellence in physiotherapy education, clinical practice, research and dissemination of knowledge.

The overall goal of the Department is to train professional physiotherapists. The specific objectives of the department include;

  1. To provide effective professional education experiences for students in physical therapy as well as other professional disciplines.
  2. To conduct research activities which contribute to improved patient care and advance the knowledge base of Rehabilitation Services
  3. To develop model clinical programs which support the practice and academic occupational and physical therapy communities
  4. To provide a practice environment that supports professional growth and personal satisfaction.

Environmental and public health is the study of the role of environmental factors in adverse human health outcomes and how to recognize and prevent these effects. The Department of Environmental and Public Health Sciences (DEPHS) is committed to studying how environmental factors negatively impact human health, how to recognize and prevent these effects, and how to improve public health through clinical care and health care policy.

The department prepare students to lead sustainable action, shape public health policy, and pursue jobs in public health practice, academia, advocacy, medicine, and beyond.

The DEPHS’s mission is to conduct impactful transdisciplinary research, educate and train future leaders, and engage local and global public health practitioners and communities with the goal of promoting healthy, equitable living and work environments.

The department has the following objectives;

  1. To perform research on the pathogenesis and prevention of environmentally-produced illness that will act as a catalyst for scientifically based public health advances in society.
  2. To perform research that will range from the molecular to the epidemiological levels and will utilize a diversity of appropriate technologies.
  3. To produce well-educated scientists, engineers and professionals with the ability to advance environmental and public health in all sectors of society both domestically and internationally.
  4. To seek collaborations to maximize the departmentโ€™s resources and impact: establish and strengthen collaborations with universities and organizations throughout the world.
