The mission of the faculty is to provide student centered, professional education in management and social sciences to its clients by seeking to achieve excellence in teaching, service and research. Through focused partnerships with stakeholders, the qualified and experienced faculty and staff provide technologically relevant services that contribute to Nation’s sustainable development.

Philosophy

The faculty believes that research and pedagogy should advance business and socioeconomic justice, promote an understanding of change, and train the next generation to influence public debate.  Its commitment to progressive values, academic freedom, rigorous scholarship, and critical theory lies at the heart of NUM’s educational philosophy.

Objectives

The overall objective of the FMSS is to foster the acquisition of knowledge by way of individual, departmental or inter-departmental research projects geared towards finding solutions to identified national problems. Students will be equipped with realistic methodologies that emphasize analytical skills and problem-solving efficiency, based on a sound grounding on some current theoretical framework(s) in various professional models.

The MSS Faculty boasts academic disciplinary knowledge in business administration, accounting, economics, political and communication sciences, all with a focus on tackling societal challenges.

The FMSS is head by a Dean and members of the Faculty Board of Studies (FBS). Collectively, they are working tirelessly to focus the Faculty on student experience, strengthening the research prowess of the Faculty and planning and carrying out the Faculty’s strategy.

About

The Department of Accounting and Finance of the Newgate University Minna encompasses two closely related disciplines. It was established to provide students with high quality education and training on contemporary fields related to Accounting and Finance to prepare them for careers in established and emerging areas of finance and accounting, such as banking, financial and management accounting and risk management.

The academic programmes of the Department are designed to give students the opportunity to acquire specialized academic knowledge and skills based on current developments in the field of Accounting and Finance. In addition, the Department places emphasis on the practical implementation of academic knowledge by integrating laboratory courses, making extensive use of IT tools and enabling students to participate in the University’s Community Engagement Programme.

The Department boast of expert staff who consult for leaders in business and government, state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities, and a strong research culture. The Head of Department oversee both academic and administrative activities of the Department.

The Department of Management Studies was established as one of the pioneer Departments in the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences to to prepare students in the field of business administration and human resource management with with the most up-to-date knowledge, skills, and abilities that will enable them manage the human, financial, marketing, and technological resources of organizations, corporations, and state institutions in today’s competitive global business environment.

Our students are exposed to issues and problems associated with the business world, work in groups towards the accomplishment of a common goal or series of tasks and develop the skills necessary to present their opinions on all aspects of the business world in a professional, principled and constructive way.

The Head of Department oversee both academic and administrative activities of the Department. The qualified and experienced faculty cooperate with the business world and governmental and nongovernmental institutions in Nigeria and beyond, to offer our students engaging hands-on learning opportunities through community-based coursework and engagements, one-on-one faculty research collaborations, and rewarding internships.

The department places a particularly strong emphasis on students, incorporating independent learning experiences, and extensive student-community interaction. The main objectives of the department are:

  1. to serve the community by providing programmes of study that are professionally oriented, comprehensive, relevant to today’s business world, and of high standard;
  2. to produce well-rounded business and economic graduates who are equipped with analytical, quantitative, managerial and human skills to make sound and responsible decisions;
  3. to produce graduates who are aware of the connection between business-management decisions and political, social, economic, legal, ethical, technological and environmental factors;
  4. to prepare our students to apply effectively, the knowledge in business and economics through service activities;
  5. to encourage the use of experiential learning, including cooperative education, as a means to introduce students to the world of work, reinforce classroom teaching, and assist in the development and advancement of career goals; and
  6. to prepare our undergraduate students for graduate training in economics, law and business administration.

The Department of International Relations aims at providing high quality education and services that are capable of creating a diplomatic generation that has the necessary skills to work in political institution, embassies, consulates and subsidiary bodies.

The Head of Department oversee both academic and administrative activities of the Department. The faculty are scholars and teachers who devote their careers to making important contributions in their disciplines through research, writing, and service.

Mission & Objectives

The Department strives to generate new knowledge  in the fields of International Relations and Diplomatic Studies to produce well-educated, principled citizens, who are capable of initiating careers as skilled internationl relations practitioners.

In pursuing its mission, the Department shall focus on achieving the following goals:

  1. Provide an internationally distinctive learning experience that combines academic excellence with the personal development that comes from university life.
  2. Produce research of international excellence in all our courses to enhance the contribution to the economic, social, cultural and educational life of the country, while building the strengths necessary to be recognized as regional leaders in the various disciplines.
  3. To undertake teaching, research and extension programs in major branches of International Relations.
  4. Provide interdisciplinary academic teaching, promoting and encouraging new lines of thought, ideas and contributions in already existing, emerging and new fields.

The Department aims at producing well-educated, principled citizens, who are capable of communicate across multiple media platforms and share messages around the globe.

In pursuing its mission, the Department shall focus on achieving the following goals:

  1. cultivate in students the practice of acquiring interdisciplinary knowledge and developing analytical and critical skills for acquiring balanced views of world issues;
  2. develop in students good oral and written communication skills necessary to the journalism profession;
  3. develop the ability of students to collaborate with specialists in other fields in order to be informative, analytical, and critical in their reporting on issues;
  4. cultivate in students and an understanding of the ethical and moral contexts in which they apply their knowledge and skills;
  5. prepare students for employment and career advancement in local, national and international media markets; and
  6. maintain strong relationships with alumni, community, business and non-profit sector.
