About the Faculty

The Newgate University Minna (NUM)Faculty of Law is named after Late Hon. Justice Idris Legbo Kutigi, a distinguished and respected Supreme Court Justice of Nigeria. The Faculty building was commissioned on 22nd December 2023. The Faculty of Law Complex is not merely a structure of bricks and mortar but a symbol of our commitment to excellence in legal education. Through its faculty and infrastructure, the Faculty will play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of legal professionals, fostering a passion for justice, and contributing positively to the legal landscape in Nigeria and beyond.

The Faculty of Law at NUM ย is committed to providing high-quality legal education, fostering intellectual curiosity, and instilling a sense of social responsibility in our students. We aim to produce graduates who are well-versed in legal principles, critical thinking, and ethical standards, ready to make meaningful contributions to the legal profession and society.

Aims and Objectives of the Faculty

The Faculty aims at providing in-depth education that fuses pedagogical and practical approaches to produce graduates practitioners and scholars who can function optimally in every area of the legal profession in the 21st century and beyond.

The Objectives of the Faculty are to;

  1. train lawyers who will use law as a tool for the resolution of various social, economic and political conflicts in society, and whose level of education has equipped properly to serve as advisers, solicitors or advocates to governments, business and other associations, individuals, families and other bodies.
  2. mainstream the most current and coherent theoretical knowledge, and clinical experiences to help graduates become first-rate professionals who understand the complexities of social settings in which legal problems manifest and have the ability to offer viable solutions to their client;
  3. employ problem-based approach to studying law, employing simulations, real life clients so as to ensure that each lesson has outcomes that are subjected to formative assessment;
  4. harness clinical skills to meet the peculiar needs of our host community for legal counselling services in the areas of micro-financing, small and medium scale enterprises, agriculture, land use and customary tenancy and other legal relationships; and
  5. deploy the impacted skills and methods as well as modern technologies, especially Information and Communication Technology, for the achievement of the objectives herein contained.

Departments

Department of Private Law

The Department of Private Law is responsible for teaching several of the core subjects in the LLB curriculum.ย  The main subjects taught are Legal Methods, contract law, property law, family law, business law, law of torts, property law and the nature of the legal systems, and the jusisprudential and historical context of private law.ย The department will provide students with a strong foundation in legal principles relevant to private transactions and relationships.

Department of Public Law

The Department of Public Law is responsible for a variety of courses including public law and jurisprudence courses (i.e. human rights law, public international law, constitutional law, jurisprudence, administrative law as well as legal interpretation). These disciplines organize the various relationships in which the State is party to as public authority, and aim at achieving the public interest. The Department aims to qualify students of the Faculty in the stated subjects, to conduct original research and to provide service to community.

The Faculty of Law boasts of a distinguished team of experienced and dedicated faculty members. Our faculty bring a wealth of expertise from diverse legal backgrounds, ensuring that students receive a well-rounded education that reflects the breadth and depth of the legal field.

Teaching Methodology

The Newgate University Minna’s Faculty of Law promotes teaching strategies which blends the classroom/online learning with enormous focus on hands-on exposure (e.g., presentations, research, case studies, simulation exercise, seminars and conferences) that improve student performance and learning.

Law is a dynamic business domain, and the faculty put emphasis on discussions/ debates on the latest events and judgments given by various courts, so that the students are able to follow developments in law in an objective manner.
