Research Focus Areas

Research in Newgate University Minna is built on the foundations of various academic programmes run by the Departments. The main aim is to seamlessly integrate research and development with academics and encourage faculty members to undertake high-impact research that shapes healthier, smarter, and more sustainable communities across the following five broad interdisciplinary areas of research focus.

Fundamental Bioscience

This research group focuses on understanding the mechanisms and systems underlying behavior, diversity of functions, disease, and health at the molecular, cellular, and whole-systems levels to develop interventions that improve human health. Fundamental Bioscience research is critical in underpinning Health research at the University

Genomics and Biotechnology

While biotechnology established the tools necessary to modify genes, genomics provided a new platform for the genetic analysis of genes of animals and plants. This multidisciplinary research group focuses on the use of biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use in medicine, industry, agriculture, and the environment.

Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology for health uniquely interface with several scientific disciplines including chemistry, biology, engineering, physics, pharmaceutical sciences, and medicine to innovate solutions to the many challenges that have historically burden the Nigeria and Africa continent. The Nanotechnology Research Group  conduct multidisciplinary and translational research  to  develop nanoscale materials for pharmaceuticals. The group collaborates internally and externally to deliver nanoscience- based solutions for infectious diseases like malaria and tuberculosis, and various cancer.

Nutrition and Health

Nutrition has long been recognised as a vitally important determinant of human health and, as dietary patterns in the world change rapidly, it currently has great prominence as an important public health issue in both industrialized and non-industrialized countries.

The Nutrition and Health Research Group is a multidisciplinary team delivering research with impact at both State and National level. The researchers collaborate with other groups within the University, public sector organisations and commercial enterprises to investigate the relationships between food, nutrition and health; undertaking research to help better understand the complexities underpinning healthier dietary choices.

Social and Economic Development

The Social and Economic Development Research Group is focused on contributing to a better society by enhancing the understanding of socio-economic issues that primarily affect the lives of various groups in the society and their relationship to public and private investments, programs, and policies. The group uses evidence-based analysis to achieve the best outcomes in the face of constantly changing economic, political, physical, and social environments.

Computing and Informatics

The goal of this research is to provide key partner industries and organizations with the required systems, policies, practices and technologies to effectively respond to constantly changing technological landscapes.

The group is working on developing collaborations with other established research groups within and outside the University to conduct research across a variety of fields and have identified two main areas of focus:

  • Computational Intelligence and Applications (CIA) – research on computationally intelligent methods and techniques to real-world applications targeting enhanced living and society.
  • Network Infrastructures, Computing and Cyber Security (NICCS) – research into network technologies that underpin today’s connected world with emphasis on middleware technologies, cloud-based systems, and security and mobile systems.
