Teaching and Learning

The teaching and learning approach at Newgate University Minna (NUM) is based on learner-centered, blended, and community-based learning.

Learner-Centered Learning

As a major defining character, the University has adopted the learner-centered methods of learning. This means that students can ask questions and do research in their field to learn and discover answers on their own; be taught in a classroom or other formal contact environment but also find additional activities, notes, resources and videos to supplement their classes online; or apply their knowledge in a practical way to help communities around the University.

At NUM, the traditional “Lecturer” is replaced by a “Learning Facilitator” to operationalize the philosophy of bringing out the best in each individual student. Faculty are encouraged to effectively use the traditional lectures, seminars, laboratories, and practical sites, together with online learning platforms.

Blended Learning

In this mode of learning, students attend lectures, practical sessions, and tutorials, however, part of the learning is dependent on access to the online learning management system, known at the University as the Newgate University e-Learning Platform (NUeL)

Any mobile device, such as an internet-enabled cell phone or tablet, can be used to access NUeL. There are Wi-Fi hot spots across the University campus for use by students with their own devices. The University is aware that not all students own the latest technology or device, therefore, more than 300 computers has been made available in computer laboratories for student use.

Community-Based Learning

As a means of implementing project-based learning, the University puts emphasis on community-based learning. All undergraduate programs have compulsory curricular community engagement for which students earn credits towards their degrees and community development.

This is aimed at inspiring and empowering students with the practical translation of academic curricula into community service and enable NUM graduates to have a sense of social responsibility, respect human rights and dignity and exhibit informed civic, cultural, and environmental awareness.

Embedded Entrepreneurship and Career Guidance

In order to groom professionals with a strong entrepreneurial orientation, entrepreneurship and career guidance are embedded in every curriculum of the University. Rather than following the common practice of teaching about entrepreneurship as a separate subject, entrepreneurship is built within the learning activities of every course, leading to discipline-specific entrepreneurial outcomes
