About this Programme

Physical therapy is an integral component of health care, and a profession that promotes health and optimal function across the life span. The Doctor of Physiotherapy (DPT) degree program at Newgate University Minna has been designed to educate students to be highly skilled, evidence-based physical therapist who improves the health of their patients through the application of clinical skills, collaboration with other health care professionals, and commitment to life-long learning and community service.

The curriculum has been designed along four core-areas of disease/injury prevention, health promotion, curative and rehabilitation to be implemented through blends of coursework, lab work, and clinical experiences. Students will learn how to manage patients and clients with musculoskeletal, neuromotor, cardiopulmonary, and integumentary dysfunction. Through participation in research courses and integration of evidence-based practice throughout the management courses, graduates become critical consumers of research and evidence-based practitioners.

Graduates shall be eligible for registration to practice physiotherapy in Nigeria and elsewhere by the licensing authorities such as the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Registration Board of Nigeria.

Upon successful completion of the DPT degree program, graduates will be able to:

  • Screen, examine, evaluate, and diagnose diverse patient/client population with impairments, functional limitations and disabilities related to movement, physical dysfunction, health and wellness.
  • Plan and implement standard and innovative interventions for individuals with impairments, functional limitations, and disabilities related to movement, physical dysfunction, health and wellness.
  • Integrate the best contemporary evidence for physical therapy practice given increased clinical expertise and patient/client values, needs and preferences.
  • Integrate scientific and clinical evidence in physical therapy practice, and contribute to the evidence for practice.

ABout this Programme

Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) is a challenging profession requiring precise and accurate evaluation techniques and keen problem-solving and judgment skills that apply the basic sciences to the clinical diagnosis of health and disease. Medical laboratory scientists are educated in the theoretical and practical aspects of laboratory medicine. As vital members of the health care team, laboratory professionals provide information necessary for the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

The Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) degree programme is designed with emphasis on the modern trends on theoretical and practical learning experiences that are based on laboratory sciences and focuses on specific areas such as clinical chemistry, medical microbiology, hematology, histology, and immunology, delivered over 5 years duration.

The goal of the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS) degree programme is to prepare a top-quality medical laboratory professional who will competently meet the healthcare diagnostics and research needs of the community in all settings.

The main objectives of the bachelor honours degree programme in medical laboratory sciences are to:

  1. instill in students a sense of enthusiasm for the profession; an appreciation of its application in different contexts (in areas such as general medicine, food and beverages, pharmaceutical industries, utility departments e.g., water corporations; research institutions, etc).
  2. involve the students in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning, studying and research.
  3. provide students with a broad and balanced foundation of medical laboratory knowledge and practical skills; performing effectively in clinical diagnostic services, academics and quality assurance; and function independently or in collaboration with other members of the health team in the care of individuals and groups at all levels of health care.
  4. develop in students, the ability to apply their medical laboratory knowledge and skills to the solution of theoretical and practical problems in laboratory medicine.
  5. develop in students through an education in medical laboratory sciences, a range of transferable skills of value in medical and non-medical employment.
  6. provide students with a knowledge and skills base from which they can proceed to further studies in specialized areas involving medical sciences.
  7. To generate in students, an appreciation of the importance of medical laboratory sciences in an industrial, economic, environmental, health and social context.
  8. generate students with the ability to produce biological and diagnostic reagents as well as being able to fabricate and maintain laboratory equipment.
  9. empower graduates of Medical Laboratory Sciences with skills that will enable them engage in income yielding ventures.

On successful completion of the program, the graduates will possess the following competencies;

  1. Laboratory Tests and Diagnostics
    • Demonstrate cognitive knowledge through understanding and performing the full range of medical laboratory tests in the areas of hematology, clinical chemistry, immunohematology, microbiology, serology/immunology, coagulation, molecular diagnostics, laboratory operations, and other emerging diagnostics.
  2. Critical Thinking
