About this Programme

The mass media is a critical resource for citizenship in any country because it enables access to information, facilitates public debate on important national issues and makes it possible for people to recognize themselves and their aspirations in the range of representations on offer. The mass media is a sine qua non for democracy to take root, and hence development.

This programme in Mass Communication and Journalism offered by NUM is intended to answer the need for trained personnel in the field of Mass Communication and Journalism in Nigeria to ensure that the media and communication industry is constantly served by well trained and professional journalists and communicators, who have the requisite skills not only in the broad areas of journalism and mass communication but are also ICT savvy and well grounded in issues of economics and development.

The objectives of the BSc. Mass Communication and Journalism programme are to equip students with the appropriate knowledge and skills in journalism and mass communication in order for them to:

  1. Appreciate the role of the media and communication as a key resource for citizenship in their country.
  2. Practice professional in journalism, media and communication.
  3. Analyze, evaluate, and process a wide range of information, optimizing all the available opportunities and technologies;
  4. Gain and put to optimum use good writing and other communication skills.
  5. Appreciate the information needs of their audiences and package information for the audiences in the right and appealing manner.
  6. Understand both the local and global social, political, economic and technological contexts in which journalism and communication are practiced.

On completion of B.Sc. in Mass Communication programme, graduates will be able to:

  1. differentiate “Soft News” from “Hard News”, Truth from falsehood, responsible Journalism from irresponsible Journalism;
  2. establish his/her own Newspapers, Magazines, Public Relations and Advertising Agencies, or even his/her own radio and/or television stations.
  3. demonstrate skillful and knowledgeable techniques of media organization, management and production.

Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Entry Mode

  1. A minimum of 5 credits in the Senior Secondary School certificate Examination (SSSCE), GCE O’Level, NECO, NABTEB or other equivalents.
  2. The credits must include English Language, Mathematics and other relevant subjects obtained in not more than two sittings.

Direct Entry

  1. Satisfaction of the UTME requirement and a Diploma in Mass Communication from any approved institution
  2. Candidates with GCE ‘A Level’ are no longer considered for direct entry in Mass Communication because of the subject combinations and lack of professional foundation in advanced level subjects. Such candidates are advised to take the UTME.

About this Programme

The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Criminology and Security Studies (CSS) is designed to produce a crop of graduates equipped with appropriate knowledge in the field of Criminology and Security Studies and to make their contribution to the development in Nigeria, Africa and the global community.

The aims and objectives of a degree in Criminology and Security Studies to:

  • Instill in students a sound knowledge of Criminology and Security Studies, an appreciation of its applications in different socio-cultural contexts and to involve the students in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experiences of learning and studying;
  • Provide students with broad and well-balanced theories and methods of the discipline;
  • Cultivate in students the ability to apply their knowledge and skills of the course to the understanding and solution of societal problems in Nigeria and elsewhere;
  • Provide students with relevant knowledge and skill base from which they can proceed to further studies in special areas of Criminology and Security Studies or multi-disciplinary areas involving Criminology and Security Studies;
  • Producing students with the requisite skills to compare the crime situation in various contexts such as urban and rural settings as well as between various countries;
  • Instill in students an appreciation of the importance of Criminology and Security Studies in contemporary world affairs; and
  • Develop in students a range of useful competencies for employment whether public, private or self-employment.

On completion of B.Sc. in Criminology and Security Studies, graduates will be able to:

  • Apply criminological theories, principles and rules in political, social and economic context;
  • Demonstrate skills in criminology and security research, logical argumentation, and vigorous analysis of security principles;
  • Analyze the security challenges facing Nigeria and the role of the security profession in addressing them;
  • Demonstrate leadership in the area of community policing.
  • Formulate and defend a robust and thoughtful code of professional conduct consistent with the guidelines of the profession and their religious and/or moral values system(s).
  • Communicate effectively on the security matters and needs using appropriate terminologies.
  • Conduct effective criminology research which contributes and enhances security knowledge base.

Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

Candidates who wish to study Criminology and Security Studies must have

  • obtained a credit in Mathematics and English Language plus credit pass in any three of the following subjects: Economics, Government, History, Literature, Biology, Geography and Religious Studies at the SSCE, NECO, GCE or their equivalent in not more than two sittings, and
  • Acceptable score in English Language and any other 3 subjects in Arts, Social Sciences, or science in JAMB.

Direct Entry

Candidates for Direct Entry admission shall possess

  • five credit passes in the SSCE, NECO, GCE or equivalents at not more than two sittings; and
  • Possess the Advance Level of General Certificate of Education or its equivalent in at least two subjects, or
  • Possess National Diploma in Public Administration, criminology, criminal justice, law enforcement, or security studies and relevant courses from recognize institution approved by the senate of NUM.

About this Programme

International relations is the study of an international system composed of territorial states which acknowledge no superior authority over matters which they consider of vital interest. This degree studies the functioning, theory and history of this system, and the nature of the changing relations between states and non-state actors. The Bachelor of Science in International Relations and Diplomatic Studies (BIRDS) is a multi-disciplinary programme which has been designed for those engaged in, or planning to embark upon, a professional career requiring international expertise in government, non-profit, corporate or academic environments.

The Programme is intended to elucidate the role of cooperation, collaboration, foreign policy, international law and diplomacy among others as the main vehicles for systematically addressing the broad cluster of issues that affect the entire world and in particular, the most troubled hotspots, with regional consequences.

The philosophy underlying the B.Sc. International Relations and Diplomatic Studies Degree programme is to produce a flow of competent and confident graduate students whose minds are have the knowledge, skills, competencies and exposure in the field of International Relations, in order to pursue a life in government, business and journalism and at international organizations and law firms, or to continue with graduate studies in political science and international relations.

The aims and objectives of the International Relations and Diplomatic Studies Degree Programme are:

  • Stimulate in students an appreciation of International Relations theories and other tools of analysis, and application in different contexts at the national and international levels.
  • Provide students with a broad and balanced knowledge and practical skills in International Relations;
  • Develop in students the ability to apply their International Relations theories, analytical tools, knowledge and skills to the solution of international problems;
  • Develop in students a range of skills that are relevant to both governmental and non-governmental agencies at home and abroad;
  • Produce student who have the competences in fieldwork, data collection as well as ability to analyse and present these in coherent form;
  • Provide students with relevant knowledge and skills for further studies in International Relations as a multi-disciplinary field of study;
  • Generate in students an appreciation of the importance of International Relations in a national- political, economic, and social development on the one hand and in the maintenance of global peace and security on the other.

On completion of B.Sc. in International Relations and Diplomatic Studies programme, graduates will be able to:

  • analyze national and global events from various social science perspectives.
  • demonstrate theoretical and practical knowledge on international relations and diplomacy.
  • state views and positions with advanced oral and written skills.
  • compete for increasing career opportunities in national and global institutions.
  • gain the ability to make logical inferences on social and political issues based on comparative and historical knowledge.

UTME:

  • Candidates who wish to study International Relations must possess the Senior Secondary School Certificate, General Certificate of Education, by WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or their equivalents with at least five credit passes, at not more than two sittings including Mathematics, English Language, Government or History or Economics or any Social Science subject.
  • In addition, candidates must have acceptable passes in UTME. The UTME subjects must be in the following: English, Mathematics, Government; Plus, any other Social Science subject.

Direct Entry:

  • Candidates for Direct Entry admission shall possess five credits, in GCE, SSCE by WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or their equivalents; and JUPEB, IJMB, Ordinary National Diploma (O.N.D) or Higher National Diploma (HND) with at least lower credit in related disciplines from approved Nigerian Polytechnics. For emphasis, credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and any one of Government, History or Economics are required.

About this Programme

Human resource (HR) managers are the stewards of a company’s workforce. Without their expertise in finding and retaining the right employees, an organization can struggle to achieve its sustainability and growth goals. Because human resource managers are such a vital component of a company’s success, they need to learn and cultivate high-level knowledge and skills.

The Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management will equip students with the necessary skills to successfully manage human capital within organizations. A focused curriculum will cover topics that include building effective teams, compensation, global human resources, personal leadership skills, diversity and inclusion, recruitment, training and development, labor laws, and consulting.

The Program of Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management at Newgate University aims to:

  1. Provide specialized knowledge of human resource management, including techniques, theories, business models and ethical principles required to pursue a profession and continue post-graduate studies
  2. Enhance student’s ability to apply generalized and specialized knowledge, skills and competence to a wide variety of practical scenarios in the local, regional and global business environment
  3. Enable students to apply research and theoretical knowledge in professional practice within contemporary organizations
  4. Foster student’s understanding of diversity, culture, globalization, social responsibility and ethics in business
  5. Develop student’s skills in technological agility, including decision making and integrating current and emerging technologies within business contexts
  6. Provide students with learning environment needed to develop professional and technological skills to satisfy labor market needs
  7. Cultivate transferrable skills on leadership, collaboration, problem solving, communication, analytical thinking, independent and life-long learning to enhance employability and adapt to rapidly changing environments

On completion of B.Sc. in Human Resources Management, graduates will be able to:

  • acquire knowledge of industrial relations and Personnel Management and be able to apply appropriate strategies in personnel management functions land be professionally qualified to practice the profession.
  • Integrate human resource management systems in dynamic and multicultural global organizations
  • Apply effective management consulting skills to diagnose and solve complex organizational issues.

Candidates for admission into the four-year degree programme in Human Resource Management should:

  • Possess the Senior Secondary School Certificate either by WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or their equivalents with at least five credit passes, at not more than two sittings including Mathematics, English Language and Economics, plus any two Social Science subjects.
  • In addition, candidates must have acceptable passes in UTME. The UTME subjects must be in the following: English, Mathematics, Economics and any other Social Science subject.

Direct Entry

  • Candidates for Direct Entry admission shall possess five credits, in GCE, SSCE, WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or their equivalents, of which at least two shall be at Advanced Level/Diploma provided that such passes are not counted at both levels of the examination. For emphasis, credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and Economics are require.

About this Programme

The Bachelor of Science in business administration degree program provides students with a comprehensive knowledge of business theories and models and their application to real world problems, with a focus on:

  • Analysis of business problems and opportunities.
  • Key business functions, such as leadership and entrepreneurship.

The program has three overarching goals and Objectives:

Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Applicants:

  • An acceptable score in the UTME and at least five (5) credits including Mathematics, English and Economics or Commerce in Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or National Examination Council (NECO) in not more than two (2) sittings

Director Entry Applicants:

  • Direct entry applicants must have at least four (4) credits including English and mathematics in SSCE or NECO in at most two sittings and at least two passes in ‘A’ level G.C.E or Diploma at credit level or Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB).

About this Programme

Banking and Finance are two of the most important fields that are growing locally and globally. The Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Banking and Finance, offered by Newgate University Minna (NUM), is a four-year, full-time study program. The degree programme introduces students to the fundamentals of Banking and Finance and provides them with the skills necessary for a broad understanding of the theoretical and practical aspects of the banking and finance sectors within a global economy characterized by continuous development, innovation, competition and change. The Program will prepare students for a specialist career in accountancy, consulting, commercial or investment banking, trading and sales or risk management, as well as areas of business management.

The University has created an effective learning environment, which will allow students access to the latest banking and financial sector knowledge.

The aim of the program is to develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the theories and principles underpinning banking, finance and capital markets, and their application to retail and wholesale financial services within the broader context of globalized banking and financial services.

Within the context of achieving the Institute’s mission statement the BSc in Banking and Finance aims to:

  • Develop students’ knowledge and understanding of the theories and principles underpinning banking and finance, and their application to retail and wholesale financial services within the broader context of globalized banking and financial services.
  • Ensure graduates have the knowledge and skills to identify, assess and manage risk exposures inherent in financial institutions and markets.
  • Enable the development of intellectual skills including critical, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Support the development of a range of subject-specific and general practical and transferable skills.
  • Develop students’ ability to analyze, interpret and communicate financial information.
  • Develop students’ interpersonal, research, computing and communication skills.

On completion of B.Sc. in Banking and Finance programme, graduates will be able to:

  • apply banking and financial knowledge in the operation and management of banks, financial institutions and other organizations and be professionally qualified to practice the professions.
  • Use a comprehensive range of theoretical and practical knowledge to solve complex problems in core areas of banking, financial markets and risk-management.
  • Critically evaluate the theory and practice of investment analysis for firms and investors to inform financial decision making.
  • Apply research techniques to collate and assess a range of information sources to prepare financial analysis using quantitative analysis techniques and reasoning.
  • Work independently to solve complex problems, and contribute effectively to completing, and leading, team’s projects.
  • Assess customer’s financial needs and recommend appropriate financial products and services.

In addition, candidates with Advanced level credit in Economics, Government, and Accounting are qualified to be admitted by direct entry mode.
  • Also, candidates with the A-level, Ordinary National Diploma (OND), National Certificate in Education or Higher National Diploma (HND) obtained from accredited Polytechnics, Colleges of Education or Institutes with upper credit level pass in Accounting, Economics. Business Administration, Marketing, Business Management, and Business Communication are qualified to be admitted by direct entry mode.

About this Programme

The general philosophy of undergraduate training in the accounting programme is to provide the students with quality education and training that will develop the mind, impart both theoretical and practical knowledge on the individual student, develop self- confidence, help to be innovative and self-reliant in the field of accounting.

The learning objectives and outcomes are designed to provide students with capacity for critical thinking, technical knowledge, communication, teamwork, ethics and social responsibility, entrepreneurial skills, and use of technology.

The product of this programme should be able to design accounting systems to suit changing accounting requirements e.g. International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and IPSAS of organizations and be professionally qualified to practice the profession.

The major objectives of a Bachelor’s degree programme in Accounting are to:

  • To produce high level accounting personnel that can contribute to the development of accounting practice through researches and publications.
  • Provide basic knowledge and skills needed for the understanding and analysis of problems relating to accounting in the management of industrial, commercial, public and other human organizations;
  • Equip students with knowledge and skills of decision making; especially the analytical skills needed for recognizing, defining and solving problems;
  • Develop in students, leadership and interpersonal relations skills in accounting/management.
  • Provide training aimed at improving and upgrading the existing and potential manpower needed for national development.

On successful completion of this programme, the student will be able to:

  • Explain basic concepts and techniques of core accounting subject matter, including financial accounting and reporting, managerial accounting, auditing, taxation, and accounting information
  • Prepare and evaluate financial statements in line with the provisions of IFRS and IPSAS and statements issued by the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria.
  • Analyse management control systems, prepare budgets, and provide decision support for cost management and other managerial
  • Analyse accounting processes, evaluate risk, and recommend appropriate internal controls for accounting
  • Use accounting software to input and analyse data, improve efficiency and support management decision
  • Prepare basic tax returns, analyse and communicate the effects of basic tax rules on individuals, partnerships and corporate
  • Perform basic analyses of financial systems and statements, and write a report on the performance, financial condition, and management
  • Demonstrate skills and abilities relevant to the accounting profession, including effective written and oral communication and working effectively in
  • Identify ethical dilemmas in accounting practice and develop appropriate courses of action that consider the well-being and needs of the community and society beyond the boundaries of the professional
  • Engage in academic and professional development activities and become more aware of opportunities in the accounting
  • Leverage entrepreneurial and technological skills and experiences for career success.

Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Entry Mode

  • In addition to the University general admission requirements, candidates for admission into the four year B.Sc. Accountancy Degree Programme through UTME should possess the Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary level or an equivalent qualification with credit level passes in at least  five subjects which must include English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any one of the following – Book keeping & Accounts, Commerce, or Government obtained at not more than two sittings.
  • In addition, an acceptable pass in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), with relevant subject combination is required for Admission into 100 Level.

Direct Entry Mode

  • Applicants seeking admission by direct entry should possess five credit passes in the SSCE or GCE or equivalent examination, at least two of which shall be at the Advanced level or four credit passes at least three of which shall be at the Advanced level provided that subjects are not counted at both levels of the examination. Credit passes at the Ordinary Level must include English Language, Mathematics and Economics.
  • OND in relevant discipline with at least upper credit grade in addition to the five credit passes as in UTME entry described above.
  • HND in relevant discipline with at least lower credit in addition to five credit passes as in UTME entry described above above.
  • NCE in relevant discipline with merit level pass in addition to five credit passes as in as in UTME entry described above.
  • Final Certificate of relevant Professional Bodies in addition to five credit passes including English Language, Mathematics and Economics.

Inter University Transfer

  • Transfer students from other universities with related and relevant courses with a GPA of 2.5 on a 5-point scale. Such students must have O’ Level credit passes in English and Mathematics.
  • Transfer students from relevant courses in NUM must possess credit passes in Mathematics and English and must have completed at least one academic year in their previous course with average grades C.
