About this Programme

Human resource (HR) managers are the stewards of a company’s workforce. Without their expertise in finding and retaining the right employees, an organization can struggle to achieve its sustainability and growth goals. Because human resource managers are such a vital component of a company’s success, they need to learn and cultivate high-level knowledge and skills.

The Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management will equip students with the necessary skills to successfully manage human capital within organizations. A focused curriculum will cover topics that include building effective teams, compensation, global human resources, personal leadership skills, diversity and inclusion, recruitment, training and development, labor laws, and consulting.

The Program of Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management at Newgate University aims to:

  1. Provide specialized knowledge of human resource management, including techniques, theories, business models and ethical principles required to pursue a profession and continue post-graduate studies
  2. Enhance student’s ability to apply generalized and specialized knowledge, skills and competence to a wide variety of practical scenarios in the local, regional and global business environment
  3. Enable students to apply research and theoretical knowledge in professional practice within contemporary organizations
  4. Foster student’s understanding of diversity, culture, globalization, social responsibility and ethics in business
  5. Develop student’s skills in technological agility, including decision making and integrating current and emerging technologies within business contexts
  6. Provide students with learning environment needed to develop professional and technological skills to satisfy labor market needs
  7. Cultivate transferrable skills on leadership, collaboration, problem solving, communication, analytical thinking, independent and life-long learning to enhance employability and adapt to rapidly changing environments

On completion of B.Sc. in Human Resources Management, graduates will be able to:

  • acquire knowledge of industrial relations and Personnel Management and be able to apply appropriate strategies in personnel management functions land be professionally qualified to practice the profession.
  • Integrate human resource management systems in dynamic and multicultural global organizations
  • Apply effective management consulting skills to diagnose and solve complex organizational issues.

Candidates for admission into the four-year degree programme in Human Resource Management should:

  • Possess the Senior Secondary School Certificate either by WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or their equivalents with at least five credit passes, at not more than two sittings including Mathematics, English Language and Economics, plus any two Social Science subjects.
  • In addition, candidates must have acceptable passes in UTME. The UTME subjects must be in the following: English, Mathematics, Economics and any other Social Science subject.

Direct Entry

  • Candidates for Direct Entry admission shall possess five credits, in GCE, SSCE, WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or their equivalents, of which at least two shall be at Advanced Level/Diploma provided that such passes are not counted at both levels of the examination. For emphasis, credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and Economics are require.

About this Programme

The Bachelor of Science in business administration degree program provides students with a comprehensive knowledge of business theories and models and their application to real world problems, with a focus on:

  • Analysis of business problems and opportunities.
  • Key business functions, such as leadership and entrepreneurship.
  • Analysis and implementation of business decisions and theories.

Students learn to connect business concepts to the larger global society, with preparation for a clear career path within the field of business. They are provided a solid preparation to continue to graduate studies in business administration or related fields.

The program has three overarching goals and Objectives:

  1. Provides a framework in applying appropriate business models in decision-making situations.
  • Interpret and analyze accounting information for efficiency and continuous performance improvement
  • Apply concepts and principles for marketing resources, goods and services
  • Understand the basic principles of corporate finance and how capital markets operate
  • Understand how and when to use basic statistical analysis
  • Understand fundamental principles of economics and how they apply to business decisions
  • Identify and analyze business problems and opportunities and formulate recommendations for courses of action.
  • Identify opportunities for new business ventures, and evaluate their potential for success.
  1. Covers the knowledge and skills needed to perform effectively within a team environment.
  • Lead and/or co-lead collaborative projects using team building skills to accomplish group goals apply their knowledge of basic components and interactions between hardware and software to create programs to solve computing problems
  • Understand the basic principles of organizational theory and the relationship between employees and organizations
  • Understand the principles of setting performance goals, and monitoring, mentoring and motivating employees.
  1. Enhances a command of applying ethical reasoning to business situations
  • Demonstrate how business behavior and policies can leave a lasting effect on society, and how some portions of society may be affected differently
  • Develop self-awareness with respect to management style, time management, and sensitivity to diversity in the workplace
  • Recognize the need to respond to ethical and legal concerns relating to human resource and organizational management.

On completion of B.Sc. in Business Administration programme, graduates will demonstrate the following knowledge and skills

Business knowledge: Our students will demonstrate application and integration of knowledge in the following ways:

  • Application: demonstrate one can apply functional and foundational concepts to think critically and solve business problems in curricular and co-curricular situations.

  • Creativity: recognize when creative thinking is appropriate in a problem-solving process and generate novel solutions to problems or new ways to respond to opportunities.

  • Ethical decision making: recognize ethical issues, apply ethical frameworks to analyze them, then choose and defend a solution.
  • Reflective thinking: demonstrate careful consideration of a belief, form of knowledge, action, or experience and think about it, evaluate it, and develop insight toward future action.
  • Initiative: seek opportunities for active involvement in curricular and/or co-curricular areas.
  • Taking others’ perspectives: demonstrate an understanding of another person’s point of view in curricular and co-curricular activities.

Communication skills: Our students will demonstrate effective communication in the following ways:

  • Writing: produce quality business documents that exhibit competence in content, organization and clarity, quality, and referencing.
  • Presenting: develop and make quality business presentations that exhibit competence in content, listening, media, non-verbal presentation skills, organization and clarity, and verbal presentation skills.
  • Informal communication: communicate effectively in curricular or co-curricular small group situations.

Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Applicants:

  • An acceptable score in the UTME and at least five (5) credits including Mathematics, English and Economics or Commerce in Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or National Examination Council (NECO) in not more than two (2) sittings

Director Entry Applicants:

  • Direct entry applicants must have at least four (4) credits including English and mathematics in SSCE or NECO in at most two sittings and at least two passes in ‘A’ level G.C.E or Diploma at credit level or Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB).
